Online Showcase, June 2009
Our second Online Showcase featured a range of interesting radio, including both drama and documentary. The five productions showcased were:
‘An Enigmatic Artist – Seán Ó Riada in Paris’ – Earth Productions
The focus of the documentary is on a brief period spent by the young Seán Ó Riada - composer, larger-than-life genius, colourful and flamboyant - in London and Paris at the age of 21. This was a pivotal watershed in his development as a composer and as a man.
‘White Gypsy Boy, Black Gypsy King’ – Kevin McCann, Maccana Teoranta
This clip features ‘Black’ John Maughn, the supposed ‘King of the Gypsies’ in Cavan. He breaks horses for a living and like most travellers these days, is now settled. In this documentary, his wife and other family members are interviewed.
‘Another Blooming Day’ – Zoe Comyns
This play ‘Another Blooming Day’ is set on Bloomsday in a Dublin market. It focuses on Annabelle whose husband is of enjoying he celebrations whilst she works on the stand selling old postcards and coins.
‘A Walk to the Well’ - Mary Owens, Well Said Productions
A 7 part series of short 10 – 20 min docs describing various aspects of country life in Connemara as remembered by older people in the area eg. childhood games, customs and superstitions associated with birth and death.
‘On This Day’ – Digital Audio Productions
Through music and voice-over, this daily short-form feature narrates a pivotal event that occurred ‘on this day’ in history.
