The Man That Shot the Dog, a new 6-part series celebrating the live and times of acclaimed singer and storyteller Micel Ned Quinn from Mullaghbawn in South Armagh, begins broadcast on Bank Holiday Monday, May 3rd on Dundalk FM at 2pm. The series continues for the following five weeks and is produced by AIRPI member Mary Phelan of Sound Woman Productions.
Eighty four year old Micel Ned is known the length and breadth of Ireland. The recipient of a host of heritage award and an icon in the world of the traditional arts, he is particularly noted for his power as a live performer, and his recitations are testimony to the power of the spoken word.
Producer Mary Phelan trailed Micel to singing and storytelling events over the past two years, capturing him in live performance in a variety of locations. These live recordings of Micel in performances are interspersed with interviews with the man himself, as well as the views of people from all over Ireland on his importance to the tradition. These include Paul Flynn, Head of Traditional Arts at The Arts Council and Nicolas Carolan, Director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive.
