AIRPI member Daithi McMahon has produced The Levellers, a two-hour radio drama, which was broadcast on Radio Kerry 96-98FM and live online at www.radiokerry.ie/live.php at 9am on Easter Bank Holiday Monday 5th April.
Having also produced the critically acclaimed Tom Crean and the Terra Nova Expedition, The Levellers takes the listener back to the mid 1700’s, a time when economic changes in Ireland, Britain and the world were beginning to affect the smallest Irish villages.
The play is directed and written by Fred O’Connor who based the story on his studies of agrarian secret societies, their origins and politics. Fred was inspired by the historical origins of secret societies in rural Ireland and wanted to create a drama that reflected both sides of the land and employment conflicts faced in rural communities in the 1700’s.
The play is co-written and produced by Daithí McMahon and it also features a number of talented actors from all over Ireland including Siamsa Tire performer Alan Teahan, Cormac Costello and Kerry’s All Ireland Talent Show finalist Linda Fitzgerald as the young Sile Flaherty.
The project was funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) with the support of Radio Kerry.
